B.S. Degree | M.S. Degree | Acclelerated Program

B.S. Degree

The B.S. degree is a pre-professional degree that is designed to prepare students for graduate level study in speech-language pathology or audiology. The undergraduate curriculum is comprised of two levels: pre-CODI and CODI. Students in pre-CODI are initially in provisional status. Typically, during the freshman and sophomore years pre-CODI students are required to take a general core in the areas of English, math, science, and social and behavioral sciences as well as pre-CODI courses.

Pre-CODI courses:
113 (Introduction to Speech, Language, Hearing Disorders)
151 (General Foundation in Audiology)
152 (Speech and Language Acquisition)
240 (Anatomy and Physiology of Speech Processes)
242 (Speech, Language, Hearing Acoustics)

Students are eligible to apply for progression to the CODI program after completing pre-CODI curricula. Admission requirements are a 2.5 uncorrected cumulative GPA, and a 2.75 uncorrected GPA for the CODI courses and all developmental courses. Admission is competitive, selective, and requires faculty approval.

Upon acceptance into the CODI program, students are eligible to enroll in advanced (300 and 400 level) courses. Students must complete 25 hours of supervised observation in audiology and/or speech-language pathology at approved off-campus sites (including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, and private agencies). During the senior year, students complete a clinical assisting experience in the ULM Speech and Hearing Clinic where they gain valuable “hands on” experience with children and adults.

CODI upper level courses:
300 (Supervised Observation in Communicative Disorders)
417 (Phonetics)
418 (Phonetics Lab)
428 (Articulation Disorders)
433 (Language Pathology)
435 (Clinical Procedures and Observation),
436 (Manual Communication)
445 (Clinical Counseling)
470 (Clinical Assisting)
480 (Audiology)
485 (Aural Rehabilitation)
490 (Neurology)

M.S. Program

The master's degree program in Communicative Disorders at ULM prepares students for a career as a speech-language pathologist. The M.S. program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Graduate courses in Communicative Disorders provide students with advanced study and specialization in speech-language pathology (e.g., language, voice, phonology/articulation, fluency, swallowing, and hearing). Knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom and clinic provide opportunities for students to acquire the professional competencies necessary to practice independently in the field of speech-language pathology. Additionally, knowledge and skills acquired in the CODI research class are instrumental in allowing students to conduct independent research which is often presented at local, state, regional, and national levels.

CODI Graduate Courses:
505 (Research in Communicative Disorders)
520 (Seminar in Articulation)
525 (Stuttering Research and Remediation)
528 (Language Disorders in Children)
530 (Speech-Language Pathology Diagnostics, Birth-Five)
542 (Voice Disorders)
550 (Neurological Disorders I: Introduction and Identification)
552 (Neurological Disorders II: Evaluation and Management)
560 (Augmentative/Alternative Communication)
561 (Seminar in Oropharyngeal Involvement)
570 (Seminar in the Profession)
576 (Clinical Practicum, Site I)
577 (Audiology for the Speech-Language Pathologist)
581 (Internship, School Site)
586 (Internship, Medical Site).

Students completing the graduate program qualify for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in speech-language pathology from ASHA www.asha.org and licensure from the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology www.lbespa.org. Students from CODI typically do very well (usually 100% pass rate) on the National Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology.

Accelerated M.S. Program

Students who have an undergraduate degree in a field other than speech-language pathology may be eligible for the Accelerated M.S. program. Students initially take only undergraduate CODI courses, and add graduate courses as they fulfill undergraduate requirements. Upon completion of the Accelerated Program, students are awarded the M.S. degree in CODI and are eligible for ASHA certification and state licensure.
