Remarks from the President
Dear Members,
As
we begin the new year, I would like to start by extending our gratitude
to someone who has been
pivotal
in making our chapter the success that it is. Amparo Werner
served
as Vice President in 2000- and president in 2001. In these roles
she has contributed immeasurably to her colleagues, and we are so
grateful
for her generosity. Her organization of the annual conference in
Nachitoches showed her dedication to the teaching of Spanish and to her
colleagues. She offered us a variety of presentations as well as
a special appearance by a historical figure. In her role as
president,
Amparo served on the Board of LFLTA, participated in its annual
conference
in the spring, and presided over the conference in October, 2001.
However,
it is not only in the performance of her duties that Amparo is
special.
She brings to us
that
blend of culture and language, that positive attitude and radiant
smile,
and a work ethic that is an example to us all. Thank you once
again
for all your hard work and your contributions to the chapter, to your
fellow
teachers, and to the teaching of Spanish.
As
you will see in the newsletter, the SCOLT/LFLTA conference is scheduled
for the spring. The
Antonio
Margil Chapter will hold its spring meeting at the annual breakfast at
this conference. I
encourage
everyone to attend and participate in this special event. It is
through
working together
and
networking that we learn, grow, and bring back the results to the
classroom.
Hope to see
everyone
there!
If you would like to contact me, please feel free to email me at flnell@ulm.edu or call at (318)342-1533. I am looking forward to a productive year.
Regards, Barbara Michaelides
In Appreciation
I would like to express my appreciation for the
certificate
and wallet in recogni-
tions of the National AATSP Teacher of the Year
Award.

Annual Conference of AATSP
The annual
conference
of the Antonio Margil Chapter of AATSP was held October 27, 2001 at the
ULM Conference Center in the new library. Registration began at
9:00,
and participants received
t shirts and other
goodies donated by ULM and area businesses. The conference began
with opening remarks by President Amparo Werner, special recognition of
Dr. Chip Holloway for being named the Outstanding University Professor
of the Year by the AATSP, and continued with presentations.
The first
presentation
was "Making Connections-Spanish Style" by Diane Jenkins. Diane
presented
information on the
website that she is involved in creating for teachers of Spanish.
The website will
prove invaluable
because
it will contain the class preparation, information, and technology
needed
for different topics teachers cover in their Spanish classes.
Leanna Turner then followed with a presentation on "A Teacher's Study Abroad Experience". She shared slides and information on her trip to Spain this past summer to study language and culture. After a short break there was a presentation on "Issues of Recruitment and Retention" by Fred Adams and Barbara Michaelides. Fred had recently received a grant to attend a workshop on the recruitment and retention of foreign language students. Barbara is the Chair of the Recruitment and Retention Committee for the College of Liberal Arts at ULM. They included information and handouts on foreign language careers and the reasons for studying a foreign language.
The IDEAS session followed the presentations. This session has become a fixture at the conference because it allows participants to share hands-on activities and materials with their colleagues. Amparo Werner opened the session with her ideas and a packet of terrific materials to use in the classroom. She has compiled a collection of drawings that will help students with proficiency when practicing specific grammar points, and she included a variety of grammar and cultural activities. Ruth Rosenow also shared some beautiful music and its history with the group. She investigated the roots of a specific type of Colombian music and brought it to life with visuals and a recording. Other ideas were discussed by Diane Douglas, Ruth Smith, and María Blanca Wortham, and others.
The conference ended with a business lunch buffet. This year's nominee for Outstanding Teacher at the High School level is Ruth Rosenow of Neville High School. The nominee for the university level is Dianne Douglas of Louisiana Tech. Officers for 2002 are: President-Barbara Michaelides, Vice President-Leanna Turner, Secretary-Ruth Rosenow, and Treasurer-Lydia Keyser. The conference ended with door prizes given out by María Blanca Wortham and contributed by Houghton Mifflin. All present agreed that the conference was indeed an invaluable experience.

Message from the President
Queridos Colegas:
Sinceramente,
Amparo G. Werner
AATSP Honors Dr. Charles Holloway as 2001 University Teacher of the Year
The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) announced on April 18 that it had selected Dr. Charles Holloway as Teacher of the Year for the University division. Each year AATSP selects the Outstanding Teacher at four levels: university, two year colleges, high school, and elementary.
The organization accepts nominations from seventy-five chapters in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Dr. Holloway was the nominee of the Antonio Margil Chapter of north Louisiana, which he served as president in 1998-1999.

Dr. Holloway has also been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and was chosen as the Outstanding Professor in the College of Liberal Arts in 1999. In addition to serving as the President for Antonio Margil, Holloway has been the north Louisiana university representative on the LFLTA Board since 1995.

Message from the President
Saludos!
It is an exciting honor to be the president of the Antonio
Margil Chapter of AATSP for the year 2000. We have had an active
chapter
since its inception in the fall of 1996, and we anticipate more
activity
and growth for the future.
Membership in AATSP has been especially beneficial for me this
past year. In August I was able to attend the national conference in
Denver,
Colorado with assistance from a stipend from the national organization.
While there, I won a door prize, a CD-Rom of previous Hispania
articles.
I was also a recipient of an AATSP scholarship for two weeks this
coming
June to Barcelona, Spain.
After returning from the conference, our chapter held a social
at the Monroe home of Dr. Ruth Smith in order to start off the new
school
year. We gained several new members at this meeting.
On October 16, we held our annual fall conference at the Bentley
Hotel in Alexandria. I want to take the opportunity to thank the
officers
and other members of the chapter
who contributed to the success of the meeting. Special
recognition
goes to Dr. Chip Holloway who worked hard to plan and organize the
conference.
The program began with opening remarks by President Holloway (Univ. LA.
at Monroe), followed by my report on the AATSP national convention in
Denver.
Dr. Ruth Smith (Univ. La at Monroe)discussed the ULM-Costa Rica Program
which she directed this past summer. Dr. Dianne Douglas (LA.
Tech-Ruston)
gave a very interesting presentation on using art to teach composition
and culture.
Ruth Rosenow (Neville High-Monroe) shared some of her materals/handouts
with the group. We want to continue to expand our sharing session
during
our next fall confe-rence.
As the former Vice-President, I assumed the office of
President,and
Amparo Warner (Leesville High) was elected Vice-President. The
following
committee assignments were made: Nominating Comittee-Barbara Nell,
chair
(ULM); Geri Benton (West Ouachita High); and Denise Young (Calvin
High).
Membership Committee-Maggie Stelly, chair, (Sacred Heart Grand
Couteau);
Ruth Rosenow (Neville High-Monroe); and Dianne Douglas (La. Tech).
Betty
Evans (Mandeville) and Dianne Douglas were nominated by the chapter as
Outstanding Teachers of the Year. They will now have the opportunity to
compete at the national level.
Plans are underway for a Spanish festival for high school
students.
Hopefully, we will be able to accomplish this during my tenure as
president.
Dr. Ruth Smith is chair of this committee. We would appreciate
any
ideas and contributions anyone might have toward this project.
In closing, I am hoping to see as many of you as possible at
our spring meeting to be held Friday afternoon, February 18 in
conjunction
with the Louisisana Foreign Language Teachers Association Conference in
Hammond. The conference is a two-day event, both Friday and
Saturday,
and promises to be filled with plenty of ideas for teaching and
learning.
Join us in 2000!
