COUNSELING/THERAPY PROGRAMS |
The Ph.D. degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy at University of Louisiana at Monroe prepares graduates for careers as scholars/teachers, researchers, supervisors and senior clinicians. The 66-72 credit-hour program integrates systemically oriented philosophy and theory, clinical practice and qualitative and quantitative research.
The master's degree program is an intensive, sixty-semester hour program requiring two years of full-time study. Graduates of the program meet academic requirements for licensure as a professional counselor in Louisiana as well as Clinical Membership of AAMFT and licensure in other states as marriage and family therapists. The program is dedicated to educating highly qualified master's level clinicians and scholars.
All applicants for the M.Ed. degree in School Counseling program are expected to meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School listed above and the requirements of the specific program to which they are applying. These program requirements consist of application forms, supporting information and letters of reference. The specific minimum GPAs and GRE scores are listed in the Graduate Catalog.
Substance Abuse Counseling is an academic program specialty in an evolving
field. The history of persons and organizations ministering to alcoholics
in the United States dates to the early 1900's with the formation of the
Oxford Group, Washingtonian Society and the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous
(AA) in 1935. The success of AA and the attendant publicity increased awareness
of alcoholism. The American Medical Association and the World Health Organization
recognized alcoholism as a treatable disease by the 1960's. The initial
"inpatient treatment facility" was the Wilmar State Hospital which
developed what is today referred to as the "Minnesota Model" of
treatment. The late 70's and early 80's brought a groundswell of attention
to treatment of "addictive disorders." Many specialty areas are
being developed, explored, expanded and refined.
Admission to the Programs
Admission to all graduate programs in the Educational Leadership and
Counseling Department is a two-step process. First, the applicant must meet
the minimum requirements for admission to the Graduate School. Specifically,
applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited
institution with a grade-point average of 2.5 (based on a 4.0 scale) on
all undergraduate work pursued. The application file will not be processed
until official transcripts of all undergraduate work is received. They must
have met undergraduate prerequisites for their major and minor fields and
they must have submitted satisfactory Graduate Record Examination test scores.
These applications must be on file in the Admissions Office at least 30
days prior to enrollment in any class.
Second, every applicant must meet the requirements for the particular graduate
degree program for which they are seeking enrollment. The specific degree
programs and the corresponding requirements can be found in the respective
program insert(s) which are available through the Educational Leadership
Departmental office [(318) 342-1246.
